The oud accord is oud, or agarwood: the resin an Aquilaria tree produces in response to a fungal infection. Natural oud is one of the most expensive raw materials in the world, so perfumers often combine it with woody accords and molecules that recreate its character.
It sounds dense, dark and multi-layered: wood, smoke, leather, honey, faintly animalic and medicinal facets. In the East oud has been prized for centuries as a symbol of luxury; in European niche perfumery it is most often paired with rose, saffron, incense and amber.
