The peony is a lush garden flower with large globe-shaped buds that blooms in late spring. It smells tender and fresh, but extracting it is practically impossible, so in perfume peony is recreated as an accord.
How it smells: fresh, rosy, slightly berry-like and watery, with a light peppery shade and a springlike transparency. Peony sounds lighter and more transparent than rose — less honey, more freshness and lightness.
Peony is one of the best-loved flowers of modern feminine perfumery: it gives a fragrance cleanness, tenderness and the feel of a spring bouquet, so it often sits in the heart of fresh floral and fruity-floral compositions.
What it pairs with: with rose — a tender pink bouquet, with lychee and raspberry — fruity florals, with musk — clean skin scents, with freesia — spring freshness, with patchouli — a modern floral chypre.
Good to know: in China the peony is called the “king of flowers” and has been cultivated for more than a thousand years; every spring the city of Luoyang holds a great peony festival.
