Blood orange is a group of sweet orange varieties with ruby-red flesh. The best grow in Sicily near Mount Etna, where warm days and cold nights help the fruit develop its colour.
How it smells: juicy and bright like an ordinary orange, but with a berry-like, slightly winey and raspberry shade. Blood orange sounds darker, more piquant and more festive than the classic orange.
The red colour of the flesh comes from anthocyanins — the same pigments that colour cherries and blackberries. They have no smell themselves, so perfumers convey the “red” character with berry accents next to the orange oil.
What it pairs with: with raspberry and blackcurrant — bright fruity openings, with rose — a juicy “red” rose, with cinnamon and vanilla — warm winter compositions, with saffron — spicy luxury, with vetiver — fresh woods.
Good to know: the Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello blood oranges are Sicily's pride: “Arancia Rossa di Sicilia” is protected by the European PGI mark of origin.
