Melon, like watermelon, gives no perfumery material, so its scent is created with molecules. The best known is Melonal, which smells of juicy green melon.

How it smells: juicy, fresh and watery: the flesh of a ripe melon, a faintly cucumber-like and green shade, a light sweetness. Melon makes a fragrance cool, summery and transparent.

Melon freshness is closely linked to marine notes: Melonal and Calone often work together, creating a sense of water and fresh air. So melon is a frequent guest of the aquatic fragrances of the 1990s and their modern heirs.

What it pairs with: with marine notes — a “summer breeze”, with cucumber and greens — fresh aquatic compositions, with flowers — light spring bouquets, with musk — transparent skin scents, with citrus — a lively summer opening.

Good to know: botanically the melon is a relative of the cucumber and pumpkin, which is why a cucumber-like shade is often noticeable in its smell.
