Brandy is the general name for strong spirits made by distilling wine and ageing it in oak barrels. Cognac is the best-known brandy, but Armagnac, Spanish brandy and many others are made the same way. That is why in perfumery “brandy” sounds very close to cognac.
The brandy note is warm and “winey”: aged grape spirit, oak, dried fruit, vanilla and a light spiciness. It adds evening depth and cosiness to fragrances, like a glass by the fireplace.
