Rosendo Mateu

Names: Rosendo Mateu (English, French, Spanish) · Розендо Матеу (Ukrainian, Russian)
Born: 23 October 1945, Spain — Died: 12 May 2022
Specialization: master perfumer; worked at Puig for 45 years; author of fragrances for Kajal, founder of the Rosendo Mateu Olfactive Expressions label
At 15 he joined the Barcelona perfume company Puig as an apprentice. He studied in Grasse under the master Marcel Carles at the Roure school and refined his skills in Geneva and Paris. In 45 years at Puig he created classics of Spanish perfumery — Agua Brava (1968), Brummel (1975), Quorum (1981) — as well as fragrances for Nina Ricci, Paco Rabanne and Carolina Herrera. In the niche he worked for Kajal and other houses, collaborated for ten years with Christian Carbonnel, and in 2015 founded his own label, Rosendo Mateu Olfactive Expressions. His work is carried on by his son Joan.
Mateu was the patriarch of Spanish perfumery, a master of noble, confident classics. His fragrances have an expressive character and an impeccable structure: fresh citrus and herbs, leather, woods, warm ambery accords. Half a century of experience shows in every formula — in its balance, longevity and depth.
