“White musk” is not a single substance but a style: an accord of clean synthetic musks that smell of fresh laundry, warm skin and cotton. “White” here means cleanness and lightness, not colour.
How it smells: soft, transparent, “freshly washed”: a faintly sweet powder, the feel of clean skin after a shower, fresh sheets. White musk sounds quiet and close to the body, yet lasts very long.
The fashion for white musks began in the 1980s, when perfumers abandoned animal musks and began creating clean synthetic ones. Since then the “scent of cleanliness” has become one of perfumery's best-loved themes — from light everyday fragrances to niche skin-scent compositions.
What it pairs with: with bergamot and neroli — a “crisp shirt”, with iris and violet — cosmetic powderiness, with rose and peony — tender florals, with vanilla — warm comfort, with sandalwood and Cashmeran — a “second skin”.
Good to know: musks are also widely used in laundry products — which is why white musk feels like the “smell of clean laundry” to many people, even if they have never heard the name of the note.
