Formerly “oriental”: vanilla, labdanum, benzoin, balsams and spices — a warm resinous base.
The saffron accord is saffron, the most expensive spice in the world: a kilogram takes tens of thousands of crocus flowers whose stigmas are picked by hand. It smells leathery, honeyed and slightly metallic, with a dry spicy bitterness.
Saffron is the signature of oriental and niche perfumery: it makes rose and oud more luxurious, amber drier and leather softer. It sounds expensive and recognisable even in a small dose.
