The grapevine is not the grapes themselves but the whole plant: flexible shoots, broad lobed leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers. In perfume this note conveys the smell of a vineyard — green, sunny and a little winey.

How it smells: green, fresh and faintly fruity: juicy leaves, young shoots, a light shade of green grapes and the delicate breath of the vine in flower. The note sounds natural, calm and summery.

Vine flowers, despite their modest look, have a delicate sweetish scent resembling mignonette. Perfumers combine it with the green of the leaves to convey the atmosphere of a vineyard in early summer.

What it pairs with: with green grapes and pear — fresh fruity fragrances, with fig leaves — Mediterranean greenery, with cognac and wine — warm winey compositions, with rose — a “rose in the vineyard”, with woods — dry natural fragrances.

Good to know: the vine is one of the longest-lived cultivated plants: the oldest known grapevine, in Maribor, Slovenia, is more than 400 years old and still bears fruit.
