Vetiver (Java)

Javanese vetiver is grown in Indonesia, on the island of Java. Its roots are traditionally distilled for a long time over a strong fire, so the oil comes out thick and dark — with a distinct character perfumers recognise at once.
It sounds smokier and earthier than Haitian vetiver: damp root, a faintly “scorched” wood, a warm resinous depth, less nutty freshness. Javanese vetiver makes a fragrance dry, austere and “evening”, especially alongside leather, tobacco and incense.
