Salty notes are an abstract accord that conveys the feeling of salt on skin after the sea, of sea wind and of white crystals on coastal rocks. Salt itself has no smell, so the perfumer creates only its impression.
How it smells: mineral, warm and faintly spicy: sun-dried skin, sea salt, a light amber and the coolness of a wave. Salty notes sound sensual, natural and summery, adding an unexpected contrast to sweet and woody fragrances.
The sense of saltiness is created by mineral and ambergris molecules — the same ones that read as “skin after the sea”. Next to caramel, vanilla or flowers they make a composition more grown-up, modern and less predictable.
What it pairs with: with marine notes — coastal fragrances, with amber — “skin after the sea”, with caramel — “salted caramel”, with flowers — mineral florals, with vetiver and cedar — dry coastal woody fragrances.
Good to know: salty accords became popular in the 2010s: perfumers began adding “salt” even to gourmand compositions — and a whole fashion for salty sweets in perfume was born.
