Provençal lavender is true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) growing high in the mountains of Haute-Provence, on stony slopes above 800 metres. In summer its fields near Valensole and Sénanque turn purple, but mountain lavender yields far less oil than lavandin on the plains.
It sounds fine and soft: floral, honeyed, with a light herbal freshness and almost no camphoraceous sharpness. Provençal lavender is not the “pharmacy” kind but a tender, sunny lavender that makes a fragrance soothing and noble.
