Grapes are the juicy berries of the grapevine — green, pink or dark blue. No aromatic material for perfumery is obtained from them, so in perfume grapes are recreated with a fruity accord.

How it smells: juicy, sweet and fresh: ripe berries, the light tartness of the skin, a faintly floral and winey shade. Grape sounds joyful, summery and a little festive.

The familiar “grape” smell of grape juice and sweets comes from methyl anthranilate — a molecule present in some dark grape varieties. Pale varieties smell fresher and more delicate, with floral touches.

What it pairs with: with the vine and its leaves — a “vineyard”, with rose and peony — juicy florals, with cognac and wine — warm winey compositions, with pear and apple — fresh fruity fragrances, with musk — light summer fragrances.

Good to know: the grape is one of the oldest cultivated plants: people have grown it for more than eight thousand years, and the whole history of winemaking is tied to it.
